Cosmetic treatments allow us the opportunity to improve our appearance in many ways. For those who have acne-prone, UV-exposed, and tired-looking skin, a cosmetic procedure called microdermabrasion can help your skin look healthier and younger!
What Is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment performed in a clinician or dermatologist’s office in a matter of 15 – 30 minutes. It uses a mildly abrasive instrument, which gently exfoliates and removes dead and dry skin cells from the surface of your skin, revealing healthy skin from below and giving your face a radiate glow. The tool uses aluminum oxide crystals or a diamond-encrusted tip to clear the surface of your skin. It also uses suction or vacuum to remove loose skin cells from the face.
The Benefits of Microdermabrasion
As microdermabrasion renews your skin, it gets rid of wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, spots, and uneven skin tone. You’ll also get plumper and softer skin! Microdermabrasion is a very safe procedure for all skin types and age groups. Aside from acne-prone skin, it also works on dry, oily, and even sensitive skin. Deep exfoliation delivered through microdermabrasion can give you these benefits:
- Fewer breakouts. By unclogging pores and taking out the buildup of dead skin, microdermabrasion can reduce acne, blackheads, and breakouts.
- Glowing complexion and plump skin. The removal of dead skin allows for the production of collagen and elastin. With elastin and collagen, microdermabrasion brings back your skin’s elasticity. The combination of clear, glowing, and plump skin helps your skin look younger and healthier.
- Prevent premature aging. Microdermabrasion also helps prevent signs of premature aging on your skin. When you expose yourself to harsh UV rays of the sun, it leaves your complexion dry with spots and etches of fine lines and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion (combined with the regular use of sunscreen) can help prevent premature aging of your skin.
- Even Skin Tone. Pigmentation is the color of your skin. A condition called hyperpigmentation causes the skin to darken in some areas, giving you an uneven skin tone. Microdermabrasion successfully evens out your skin tone by reducing pigmentation and lightening dark spots.
What Happens During A Microdermabrasion Session?
Your dermatologist or clinician will advise you to avoid tanning creams, sun exposure, and waxing for several days before your appointment. Three days before, you should stop using exfoliating creams, scrubs, and masks.
Your clinician will clean your skin and begin the microdermabrasion treatment. There is no need for anesthesia or numbing agents – this treatment is painless and only causes very mild discomfort for most people. A wand with a diamond-encrusted tip or crystal spray grazes over your cleansed skin, getting rid of impurities on it. After the treatment, the clinician will apply a moisturizer to protect your skin. For the days following your treatment, you should stay out of direct sunlight and use sunscreen when you go out. Keep hydrated and use moisturizer.
